As part of my ongoing work for digital learning consultancy Workstar, I’ve recently written an eBook on xAPI, which is so significant that it will likely reshape the way we record, track, and administer eLearning for years to come. Admittedly, this change will take some time to gain momentum, but all the pieces are in place for this new standard to flourish.

Workstar has embraced xAPI for the last two years and already delivered some exciting projects that have made a tangible business impact for major organisations across the country. If you want to read this eBook, you can download it here.

Time flies. Five years ago this month, I released a book called Name That Song!

As a friend so kindly pointed out at the time, “Michael, it’s just a picture book.” And he was right. But, still…

Back in 2012, I conceived an idea to create a book featuring 99 pictograms that represented a famous song. The aim of the book is to guess as many of the songs and artists as possible. It’s fun, playful and it combines my love of music and art.

I teamed up with Sydney-based artist Daniel Gray aka Little Gonzales, whose work I’d seen (and purchased) at a couple of exhibitions.

And so, the process began. I wanted to create the book myself, which meant learning the ropes of self-publishing in a pretty quick timeframe. I also had to finance it myself, so I featured it on a crowdfunding site.  To my surprise, I reached my goal.

I also created a book launch in MART Gallery in Surry Hills, where some of the artworks were featured. Several booksellers around Australia stocked the book, and it had a great response.

While the project was pretty stressful, it was also seriously rewarding. I love working on side projects and anything that involves one of my main passions – music – always ends up being super satisfactory.

Can you name the song on the cover?

Ten years ago, over five million viewers tuned into the inaugural episode of Britain’s Got Talent to witness mobile salesman Paul Potts shuffle up to the microphone to perform his rendition of Nessun Dorma.

For Bristol-born Paul, music was a source of solace from years of bullying, financial hardship, medical setbacks, and lack of self-confidence. This was Paul’s one chance to finally break free from his past. And as his voice soared, Britain – and the whole world – fell in love with his story and incredible talent.

A few weeks later, a record-breaking 12 million viewers saw Paul be crowned the winner of Britain’s Got Talent. His audition of ‘Nessun Dorma’ remains one of the most-watched videos in YouTube history, his debut, multi-platinum album One Chance reached Number One in 15 countries and he’s been invited to perform for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Performance on two occasions.

Paul is still touching people’s lives all around the world, and he’s about to release perhaps his most ambitious release yet, On Stage, a collection of songs he’s been inspired by or performed in leading roles – from Broadway to the West End – during his extraordinary career.

I’ve worked closely with Paul’s management company Modest! and written his new bio to celebrate the album’s release. Paul says, “I spent months listening to so many powerful songs and discovering which ones I really connected with. I also had my processional open debuts last year in London and in Szeged in Hungary.  I had great fun in performing the roles of Cavaradossi and Steersman in the productions of Tosca and The Flying Dutchman, and it would be remiss of me to not include pieces that I have performed ‘on stage’”.

Check out Paul’s new record…enjoy!

As Brian Hughes says in his blog on infographics for Huffington Post “information overload is alive and well and isn’t going away anytime soon.”

With the increased use of emails, social media, and web browsing, we are bombarded with 5 times more information than we were just fifteen years ago. With data, images, and information flying at us from every direction, how do you get your products or services noticed by your target audience?

Well, one of the best tools is infographics, and that’s because they present information in an immediate, visual fashion.

Inforgaphics also include useful information, statistics and data, and they’re easy to share on platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and Pinterest.

Infographics are great for content marketing because they are fun and easy to digest, which increases the likelihood they’ll be noticed, and they enable companies to present engaging content to their target audience that directs them to their site and products.

Here’s an infographic I recently created for Australia’s digital learning provider Workstar on the effects of good – and bad – customer service.

Women Rule.

Women are celebrated in the new publication Women In Pop, which celebrates the fearless females who have changed the landscape of music.

Edition 2 features Beyonce on the cover, and some fantastic features on Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders (who is touring Australia with Stevie Nicks later this year) and Alison Moyet, who’s just released her 9th solo album Other.

This edition also includes some reviews that I’ve written: Tina Arena‘s new Greatest Hits collection and LA-based artist Tanarelle’s soulful debut album 11:11.

Ms Arena once called me a very rude word (possibly the worst one imaginable) when I worked at MTV in the early 2000s, but that hasn’t stopped me from appreciating her as one of Australia’s finest singers.

Arena has experienced a tricky relationship with the Australian media and the record industry, most probably because she’s straight-talking, fiesty and has always marched to the beat of her own drum. As a woman in the music industry, her brashness is frowned upon.

Although she was finally recognised with an ARIA Hall of Fame Award in 2015, a typically mouthy Arena blasted the ageist, sexist radio programmers for their lack of support in a speech that has been hailed as one of the best in the awards’ history. Arena pleading with the powers-that-be to “continue to support Australian music and base your playlists on the quality of the song and not the age of the artist”, before adding in no uncertain terms, “we will decide when it’s time to stop.”  Arena also acknowledged “the women in their forties still in the game in a big way”, name-checking Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue and Annie Lennox, imploring them to “keep doing what you’re doing ladies.”

She’s a cool chick, and you can read my review of her new collection in Women In Pop now. Enjoy!

Being charged with a traffic offence can be a very stressful experience. In NSW, traffic offences are treated very seriously, and the consequences can be very expensive, and sometimes even cost you your licence.

Hopefully, you’ll never find yourself on the wrong side of the law. However, if you do, here’s a blog I recently wrote for Sydney legal firm Osborn Howell. Get yo’self outta trouble!

Around the world, more and more businesses are agile, which means business owners are now using virtual offices.

There are several shared or virtual offices in inner city locations in Australia’s capital cities, and I recently wrote a blog for Sydney’s Anytime Offices which outlines some legal requirements and answers some questions that many business owners have. Have a read here.

Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Styrke has followed up her excellent 2015 album Kiddo with a super-catchy new single ‘Say My Name’. If you’re a Tove fan, you’ll know she also released a song called ‘Call My Name’ in 2010, and she says, “it’s kinda funny, because no one actually knows how to say my name properly!” In case you’re wondering, it’s Tuuur-Vey.

I recently had a chat with Tove for Women in Pop magazine, and you can check it out here.

Do people get involved with Flashback Friday? Is that still a thing?

Here’s one, anyway.

Five years ago – eeeek – Kylie Minogue returned to Australia for a series of lo-fi, low-key shows as part of her Anti Tour.

Featuring incredible B-sides, rarities and album tracks – and not a feathered boa in sight – it was Kylie at her most authentic.

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of her breakthrough debut hit Locomotion, Ms Minogue is in the studio at the moment recording her new album.

While we wait for that, check out my review here of Kylie’s Anti Tour on the UK review site MusicOMH.

Everyone loves a pun!

In all seriousness though, property is still big business across Australia, despite some experts predicting a ‘softening’ or a or ‘correction’ of the market. In the first week of June, another flood of listings on the weekend meant Sydney set a new record for auctions in June with 789 homes auctioned, and 74.3 per cent of those sold.

I recently crafted copy for Northside Realtors, a boutique agency committed to achieving outstanding results for clients on the Lower North Side of Sydney.

Van Halen is one of the loudest, most epic bands on the planet. And, yes, the boys had a reputation for being the most badly behaved! That legendary reputation was confirmed for me five years ago by Ted Cohen, the man responsible for making sure no one died keeping them in check on tour in the 70s and 80s.

Here’s one of the latest I’ve written on the topic of developing the all-important art of empathy. This skill is crucial, especially for businesses that prioritise customer service. “The best brands are built on great stories.”
Ian Rowden, Chief Marketing Officer, Virgin Group

If you don’t have a story you are just another commodity. And one of the best ways to tell your story is through video.

Video content is often more powerful than text communications, simply because about 90% of the information our brains pick up is visual, and human beings process visuals 60,000 times faster than they can process text.

Did you know that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and it’s estimated that two-thirds of Aussies will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime?

Did you also know that the dangers of the sun’s rays are significantly higher for infants?

This is because babies’ skins are much thinner than adults’ and absorb UV rays more readily, allowing them to pass through to their delicate tissues. Also, babies are also more vulnerable to sun damage because their skins contain a much lower percentage of melanin, the body’s natural defence against the sun.

So, while many parents use muslin covers to shield their baby’s skin, they are thin and porous, meaning that UV rays can easily pass through. In fact, independent tests show normal muslin wraps provide zero protection against the sun.

To combat this problem, Sydney mum Natasha Jacquot has spent the last seven years developing a range of sun protection baby covers, which are officially rated UPF 50+, the highest sun protection category in Australia.

As the creator of musluv, Natasha is truly passionate about protecting the precious skin of as many babies as possible. I helped communicate Natasha’s new venture  www.musluv.com to the world…check it out!

Vocal powerhouse and pop chameleon Cyndi Lauper has released some excellent material over the last four decades, but her latest, Detour, may surprise a few people.

90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual, half the brain is dedicated to visual function and, importantly, the eyes are a physical extension of the brain.

With this in mind, it’s no wonder that infographics have more than doubled their presence online over the last few years

Infographics are a visually compelling communication medium that contain a mix of design, writing and analysis. When done well, they can can communicate complex data in a visual format that is potentially viral.

They take deep data and present it in a visual shorthand.

Using an infographic in your marketing or communication strategy is one efficient way of combining the best of text, images and design to represent complex data that tells a story that begs to be shared.

Infographics are attractive, easily viewed, create brand awareness, increase traffic, benefits Search Engine Optimisation, and display your knowledge and position you as an expert on your specialty field or business.

Tea Or Copy specialises in researching, writing and assisting in the creative conception of infographics.

Here is an infographic we’ve researched and structured for Australian e-learning leader Workstar on the cost of poor customer service:

Press releases are a crucial component of any promotional or marketing campaign. However, so many press releases contain spelling mistakes, sloppy structure and an unclear message. A press release is designed to attract press, but if they’re poorly communicated, journalists are not as likely to respond to them and pro-actively promote your product or service. An unprofessional communications strategy will simply make you look unprofessional.

We have written a series of press releases for a variety of publicity and marketing companies, and one of our most recent unveils Heineken‘s brand new integrated campaign ‘The Catch‘ to celebrate the release of the brand new James Bond movie, ‘Spectre‘.

If you’d benefit from having an exciting, well written press release, please get in touch, and keep a lookout for the epic ‘The Catch’ campaign which is running nationally now.

Tea Or Copy recently researched and wrote a series of instructional video scripts for iconic Aussie brand Selleys.

We’re not going to lie: we don’t know much about home repairs and we’re not a bunch of handymen, but what we can do is comprehensively research any topic and communicate it clearly, in any tone of voice. Tone of voice in copywriting and scriptwriting is crucial, and for this series, we made sure we adopted the laconic, laid back – but can-do-anything – Aussie male attitude.

For Selleys, we wrote scripts on how to fix a leaking shower screen, how to install a bathroom vanity, how to install skirting boards, how to fill a small hairline crack, how to fill gaps between skirting boards, how to repair a hole in a plaster wall, how to prepare your wall for painting, and how to build a deck.

If you’re feeling handy, and have a day or two to spare to build a summer deck, check out this video:

It’s no secret that we love music, and it’s always a joy to review new records for the holy bible, Rolling Stone.

This month, Tea Or Copy’s Michael Wilton has reviewed the new Hurts album ‘Surrender’.

So, the big questions is: have these masters of melodrama made another great record?

Well, here’s a link to the review:

http://rollingstoneaus.com/reviews/post/hurts-surrender/2453

Alternatively, you can just read it here 🙂

HURTS – SURRENDER 3.5 STARS

Broody, angular and self-conscious, Hurts are truly committed to resurrecting the art of pompous pop. While their debut, 2010’s Happiness, was a stylish homage to new wave synth, its follow-up, Exile, ventured into darker territory.

Surrender veers from pop to rave to rock, and lacks the tight conceptual direction of their earlier records, but there’s a sense of theatricality that underpins the entire album. “Rolling Stone” ramps up the drama, replete with lyrics like “In Belarus she was a vespertine, she danced the go-go for the bourgeoisie”.

The title track features a flourish of female vocals, while the over-the-top arrangement of “Wish” is as equally ridiculous as it is brilliant.
